Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad was established in 1926 for catering to the manpower needs of coal and mineral industries . Indian School of mines is directly under financial and administrative control of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India since 1996 . The academic profile of the institute changed over the time to keep abreast with The technological challenges and societal aspirations . The institute has been in service of the nation contributing immensely in nation building for last 85 years.
The first phase of expansion of the Indian School of Mines began in 1950-51, the Silver Jubilee year, when annual admissions were increased to 60 from 20 in 1926. In 1952 new disciplines - Applied Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering were added raising the intake to 100 . In due recognition of its vital role in the service of mineral exploration and mining sectors towards National economy the ISM was granted autonomy as a deemed University by the Govt. of India.
This was followed by the addition in the fields of Mineral Engg, Mining Machinery, Computer Sc& Engg, Electronics, Mechanical Engg and recently Electrical Engg and Environmental Sc & Engg.Chemical Engg. Presently the Indian School of Mines offers ten B.Tech programmes, Five Dual Degree programmes i.e. .B.Tech with M.Tech/MBA, three 5-year integrated M.Sc, 2 five-year integrated M.Sc.Tech, 2 three year M.Sc.Tech 3,two-year M.Sc,17 M.Tech,2 M.Phil, MBA ; Ph.D programmes in all disciplines . Admission to four-year B.Tech is through IIT-JEE from 1997-98 and five –year programmes are through IIT-JEE .From 2006-07, the student number has gone up to 2803. The institute is actively involved in research & development, continuing education programmes, industrial consultancy testing.
The products of Indian School of Mines are sought after at a premium by the mineral industry. The Institute has produced more than 10,000 engineers and scientists shaping Indian Mining and Mineral industry and making a significant contribution to the growth and development of the country.
